Pyrrharctia isabella caterpillar
Pyrrharctia isabella caterpillar

One of the many ‘new’ creatures for me here is the Pyrrharctia isabella caterpillar or The Isabella Tiger Moth.
Which can be found in many cold regions, including the Arctic.

The banded Woolly Bear larva emerges from the egg in the fall and overwinters in its caterpillar form, when it literally freezes solid. First its heart stops beating, then its gut freezes, then its blood, followed by the rest of the body. It survives being frozen by producing a cryoprotectant in its tissues. In the spring it thaws out and emerges to pupate. Once it emerges from its pupa as a moth it has only days to find a mate.

The Autumn weather here has been beyond words amazing.
Clear skies and blue skies. The sun warming up the days that
we turned off the heat and opened windows. When the sun goes
down its that time of year to get cozy ..

Its great to be back on line and serving you.~
Again, thank you for your patience thru this transition.

End Quote:

Magnificent Autumn!
He comes not like a pilgrim, clad in russet weeds.
He comes not like a hermit, clad in gray.
But he comes like a warrior,
with the stain of blood upon his brazen mail.

His crimson scarf is rent….
The wind…. wafts to us the odor of forest leaves,
that hang wilted on the dripping branches,
or drop into the stream.
Their gorgeous tints are gone,
as if the autumnal rains had washed them out.

Orange, yellow, and scarlet, all are changed
to one melancholy russet hue….
There is a melancholy and continual roar
in the tops of the tall pines….
It is the funeral anthem of the dying year.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
