Ways to keep your skin looking great in fall

Bath and body remedies are essential for chilly weather. Keeping your skin hydrated, clean, and protected from UV rays is vital on cold days. While you may think that huge infinity scarf is enough to keep your skin away from the bitter cold, it is still exposed to pollution, weather, and sun everyday. By using a few herbal remedies and essential oils, you can protect your skin from old man winter and look great doing it.

Aloe & Seaweed:

Recent studies have shown that aloe vera gel facilitates:

– the healing of wounds and damaged skin tissue.
– It can decrease the redness and swelling associated with a burn.
– also prevents skin damage resulting from exposure to ultraviolet radiation associated with direct sunlight.

For centuries aloe vera has been used to heal sunburns, treat acne, and fight signs of aging. Many use it as a moisturizer or aftershave because it hydrates the skin without leaving it greasy or oily. Aloe vera also contains hormones Auxin and Gibberellins. These hormones have anti-inflammatory properties and help keep scar tissue from surfacing. It even has vitamin C and vitamin E, which help keep stretch marks and wrinkles at bay.

Hydrosols :

means ‘water solution’. Also known as ‘hydrolats, floral waters & plant waters’.

The best option for treating skin:
* Usually compresses of the straight hydrosol or
* a strong dilution of 50 – 70 % and cool spring water
* Shampoos can be diluted by 50% with hydrosol.
* Conditioners can be diluted by 30% or more.
* A valuable addition to your home spa regimen.

It’s January 2011 / Happy Snow !

Sasha enjoying the Snow in back Garden!

Snowflakes are kisses from heaven. ~Author Unknown

January is in full swing here in the Big Apple! The snow has been falling for days now.

And yes, I do love the quiet beauty of snow, everything is sparkling and magical to me.

The winter season brings with it many things: winter sniffles, dry skin, winter doldrums.

Beating the Winter Blues:

You know the feeling: You’re more tired these days, maybe anxious or moody. Cocooning with some leftover Christmas cookies or other sweet and high-carb fare sounds better than hanging with the crowd. Your sexual appetite may be on a diet, or even fasting. It’s harder to get out of bed, and when you do, your mood resembles the landscape you see — cold, dark, and nasty.

The lack of sunlight affects the brain and causes ‘Seasonal affective disorder’, the aptly acronymed SAD that is typically diagnosed after at least two consecutive years of more intense symptoms.

You can do a variety of different things to help your ‘blues’:

Your skin (your biggest organ) is also taking a beating from the cold winds and the dry skin.

The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event.  You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?  ~J.B. Priestley

Stay cozy and warm and if you have to venture out into the world, drive safe.

Yes, ACORNS to eat! Once used in baking by Native Americans and still used in some cultures, nutritious acorns can be prepared for cooking (with a little patience).

Some TLC for your skin ~

Winter is approaching .. and we really need to pay special attention to our ‘skin’.   Here are some tips that may assist you with the ‘dry skin blues’.

* Hydrate your entire system with lots of water and high anti-oxidant green tea. During winter there’s a tendency not to drink as much due to cool temperatures. You may want to bring your water to room temperature to encourage drinking more.

* Eat a healthy diet of mostly raw foods, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids which produce a hydrating effect from the inside out, and antioxidants which help fight signs of aging. Winter might be a good time to increase your intake of omega-3s — and antioxidants such as Turmeric.

* Take a revitalizing bath – in warm water, not hot!
Himalayan salt baths are rejuvenating, and help dry skin to slough off. Hot water is damaging to your skin, so stick with warm water.

* Moisturize daily with non-clogging all natural moisturizers. They will nourish your skin instead of clogging it, as many toxin-impaired moisturizers do.

* It’s especially important to cleanse and moisturize before you go to bed at night, to remove impurities from your skin.

Take 5 minutes our of your day and you will be on the road to a vibrant face and healthy skin.

Every day of your life, pollution, grime and dust attach themselves to the surface of your skin.

What to do? Adjust your water temperature to be a bit cooler, limit your showers to one per day, and decrease your soak time in the bath.

* Use gentle and safe all natural skin care products. Your skin absorbs it all.

* Be sure to remove your makeup each evening. It’s a really bad idea to flop into bed, leaving makeup – not to mention environmental grime – on your face while you sleep.
Take a couple minutes to remove it, and you will find your face looking and feeling younger.

* If possible sleep on your back. Gravity creates a downward drag on your skin all day. Give your skin a break at night. By sleeping on your back, you reduce gravitational pull on your face. If you press your face to your pillow, you will likely experience increased puffiness in the morning.

* Please – Do not smoke… for your general health’s sake, and for younger looking skin. Smoking causes free radical production, which is one cause of the signs of aging.  (not to mention all the other illnesses associated with smoking).

* Apply your skin care products to warm skin, usually after your shower or after you wash your face,  in order to help your skin appear healthier. This maximizes absorption, as your pores are open and will absorb better. If your skin is cold, use a warm towel to warm your skin.

* Never pull or rub your skin. Apply your skin care products gently, and lightly tap for a few moments to help your skin absorb them. Rubbing stretches your skin and can promote sagging and wrinkles. (Note: This principle includes leaning your face on your hand while sitting at a desk, which also stretches your skin.)

* Be patient. Don’t expect changes overnight, don’t be discouraged. It may take a month or even two to three months to see any changes.
